A recent survey conducted by Fintech Telex, encompassing a substantial sample of 700,000 Edo residents (over 35% of the 1.9 million eligible voters in 2023), sheds light on the evolving political landscape in the state.
Key Findings:
- Surge in Support for Alternative Parties: The survey reveals a notable shift in voter preferences, with a significant portion of respondents expressing a preference for alternative parties, particularly the Accord Party. This suggests a potential break from traditional political affiliations that have dominated Edo politics.
- Diversity of Voices: The survey ensured a well-rounded perspective by capturing responses from voters across Edo State, encompassing various regions and socio-economic backgrounds. Participants were presented with options including established parties (PDP, Labour Party, APC) alongside the Accord Party. However, the results overwhelmingly point towards a growing inclination towards the Accord Party.
- Dissatisfaction with the Status Quo: A significant finding is the rising disenchantment with established political parties like the APC and PDP. Voters expressed concerns about transparency, accountability, and the delivery of essential services. This highlights a desire for fresh leadership and a new approach to governance.
- The Power of Digital Platforms: The survey underscores the critical role of social media and digital platforms in shaping political discourse and voter choices. Alternative parties, like the Accord Party, effectively leveraged these channels to connect with younger demographics and communicate their platforms in an engaging and accessible manner. This digital outreach strategy successfully raised awareness about alternative political options and mobilized previously disengaged voters.
Looking Forward
The preference for the Accord Party signifies a broader trend towards embracing new ideas and visions for governing Edo State. As the political landscape undergoes a transformation, the emergence of alternative parties offers a pathway for transformative change and a more inclusive decision-making process. While the survey reflects current voter sentiment, it’s crucial to acknowledge that political dynamics are fluid and can evolve leading up to the election. Factors such as candidate profiles, campaign strategies, and unforeseen developments can influence voter decisions in the final stages.

However, the personal particulars of the Governorship candidates and their running mates would be published on Saturday, March 30, a week from the last date to submit nominations as provided in Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.
The Electoral Commission is expected to publish the personal particulars by displaying copies of Form EC9 along with all academic credentials and other documents submitted by each candidate at the State Headquarters and the 18 Local Government offices across Edo State.
