Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou, will on Friday, March 8, 2024, honor the heavyweight division of boxing with an historical match.

The boxing world is abuzz with anticipation for the colossal heavyweight clash between Joshua, and Ngannou, scheduled to hold in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This fight is a unique meeting of paths, pitting a seasoned boxing champion against a knockout artist transitioning from MMA.

Anthony Joshua: From Olympic Glory to Heavyweight King

Anthony Joshua’s story is one of dedication, athletic prowess, and a meteoric rise to the pinnacle of boxing. His amateur career foreshadowed his future greatness. A gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics solidified his potential, and his transition to professional boxing was nothing short of phenomenal. Joshua amassed a near-impeccable record of 22-0, with a staggering 21 knockouts. His victories were often emphatic displays of power and precision, showcasing his sharp jab, exceptional athleticism for his size, and a devastating right hand. Victories over heavyweight champions like Charles Martin, Wladimir Klitschko, and Alexander Povetkin cemented his status as a dominant force. He unified the IBF, WBA, and WBO belts, briefly holding the WBC title as well.

However, Joshua’s reign wasn’t without its roadblocks. In 2019, the boxing world witnessed a shocking upset when Andy Ruiz Jr., a significant underdog, exposed a chink in Joshua’s armor. The loss forced Joshua to adapt and strategize. He returned with a vengeance in the rematch, displaying improved ring generalship and regaining his titles. Yet, destiny seemed to have other plans. In 2021 and 2023, Oleksandr Usyk, a highly skilled southpaw boxer, outclassed Joshua on both occasions, leaving the Brit with a thirst for redemption.

Francis Ngannou: The Terrifying Arrival from the Octagon

Before captivating the boxing world, Francis Ngannou reigned supreme in the brutal world of Mixed Martial Arts. Nicknamed “The Predator,” he carved a path of destruction in the heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Ngannou possessed a terrifying arsenal – phenomenal punching power, explosiveness that defied his size, and a granite chin that withstood tremendous punishment. His knockouts were legendary, often ending fights in a single, bone-shattering blow.

Ngannou’s decision to transition to boxing in 2023 sent shockwaves through the sport. His debut against the legendary Tyson Fury, the current WBC heavyweight champion, was a thrilling spectacle. While Ngannou didn’t secure the win, he surprised many with his ability to adapt to the nuances of boxing. He displayed impressive footwork for his limited experience and showcased his power by dropping Fury in the later rounds. Despite the loss, Ngannou proved his legitimacy as a heavyweight boxing contender.

The Last Battles

Since his back-to-back losses to Usyk, Joshua has been on a mission to reclaim his position at the top. He’s secured three convincing victories against lesser opponents, focusing on refining his technical skills and regaining his confidence. The victories haven’t been highlight-reel knockouts, but they’ve demonstrated a renewed focus on strategy and ring control. Joshua seems to be adopting a more patient approach, utilizing his jab and footwork to set up opportunities for his power punches.

On the other hand, Ngannou rides the momentum of his competitive showing against Fury. While he acknowledges the need for improvement in his boxing technique, his raw power and athleticism remain undeniable. Ngannou seems intent on proving that his foray into boxing is not a mere publicity stunt; he’s here to challenge for the heavyweight crown.

A Classic Matchup of Styles

The stage is set for an epic clash in Riyadh. The fight is with both fighters competing in the heavyweight division (over 200 lbs). The stakes are monumental. For Joshua, a win signifies a triumphant return to championship contention. It would erase the bitter taste of the Usyk defeats and re-establish him as a force to be reckoned with. For Ngannou, victory would be a watershed moment, solidifying his place as a heavyweight boxing elite and potentially earning him a shot at the undisputed champion.
