A record-breaking collaboration is looming as a Nigerian researcher, Yunusa Jibrin who lives in the United Kingdom, UK, developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that might be seen as a security breakthrough.

Fintech Telex understands that in recent years, Nigeria has faced significant security challenges, particularly with the escalating operations of banditry, which have reached alarming levels, especially in the year 2024. The pervasive nature of these security threats has extended from federal and state government levels to ordinary citizens, with reports of well-meaning Nigerians resorting to crowdfunding to pay ransom to bandits and kidnappers.

This desperate measure underscores the severity and widespread impact of banditry and terrorism, which have persisted for over a decade, causing immense hardship and insecurity across the nation.

According to reports, N3.25 trillion has been allocated to the defense and security sector, representing 11.8% of the current national budget.

Here’s How Yunusa Jibrin’s Invention Will Benefit Nigeria’s Security

Amidst this turbulent landscape, Jibrin, like many concerned Nigerians, has stepped up to confront the scourge of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism head-on. With an innovative and groundbreaking invention, Jibrin seeks to address the root causes of these security challenges and provide tangible solutions to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians.

His determination and proactive approach exemplify the collective effort of individuals within the nation who are committed to combating these threats and restoring peace and stability to Nigeria.

Jibrin, a University of Sussex alumna, characterizes his revolutionary invention as one designed to identify bandits’ hideouts. He elaborates on the development process, highlighting the utilization of AI-driven image synthesis to create a myriad of visual representations portraying bandits in desert landscapes.

The Computer Scientist underscores the significance of his research by noting its impressive accuracy in initial assessments. He employed a Vision Transformer (VT) model to effectively discern terrorist elements, marking a notable advancement in the application of artificial intelligence for security purposes.

From an exclusive interview with Vanguard;

“I undertook an innovative approach, leveraging AI-driven image synthesis to generate thousands of visual representations depicting bandits in desert environments, complete with weapons and vehicles.

“Employing this synthesized dataset, I employed a Vision Transformer model to discern terrorist elements within the images, achieving remarkable accuracy in preliminary evaluations.”

Jibrin extended an offer to collaborate with the federal government in the fight against criminals and to bolster Nigeria’s security. He emphasized that his discoveries could greatly augment the military’s effectiveness in detecting and neutralizing terrorists nationwide.

“We are actively working towards formalizing these discoveries, with plans to publish our research findings and integrate the developed algorithms into the operational strategies of the Nigerian government”, he affirmed.

In the ongoing struggle against terrorism, Nigeria stands to gain a significant technological advantage from Jibrin’s breakthrough. His innovation presents a promising tool in the nation’s quest to safeguard its citizens and secure its borders.

Jibrin Seeks Collaboration With Other Researchers

In reiterating his unwavering dedication, the researcher took a proactive stance by extending his support to a prominent computer expert hailing from Gombe State. This expert had spearheaded a team of researchers affiliated with the Federal College of Education (Technical) Potiskum. His team underscored the critical necessity of leveraging technology in the fight against terrorist factions within Nigeria.

Recognizing the invaluable expertise and innovative approaches championed by the computer expert and his team, Jibrin expressed a shared vision for a technology-driven approach to combatting terrorism in the country. By joining forces, they can harness the power of cutting-edge technological advancements to confront and neutralize the threats posed by terrorist elements operating within Nigeria’s borders.

This collaborative effort symbolizes a united front in the ongoing battle against terrorism, with a strong emphasis on harnessing the potential of technology to bolster national security and safeguard the lives and well-being of all Nigerian citizens. Through collective determination and strategic collaboration, they aspire to pave the way for a safer and more secure future for the nation.
