Kenya’s president William Ruto in a series of military promotions and changes made the appointment.
This move follows the tragic helicopter crash last month, which claimed the lives of the military chief and others, prompting the need for new leadership.

Maj Gen Ahmed’s journey to this prestigious role has shattered gender barriers throughout her career, becoming the first woman to achieve the rank of brigadier and major general in a military leadership dominated by men.
Who’s Major General Fatuma Gaiti?
Maj Gen Ahmed is a graduate of the National Defence College, one of the Military Centers of Excellence, an affiliate of the University of Nairobi’s Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies.
She is also an alumnus of the Defence Staff College having graduated in July 2000. In addition, she holds a Diploma in Management from Strathmore University College.
She first made the headlines in 2015 when former President Uhuru Kenyatta promoted her to the rank of Brigadier.
At the time, Major General Gaiti had been in service for 32 years having enlisted in 1983 before serving under the Women Service Corps.
She was commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant in 1985 and posted to the Kenya Air Force.
They were an auxiliary service offering support duties such as administrative work, logistics, medical, and communication.
The unit was disbanded in 1999 and it was only then that its members were allowed to join the main military services – the Navy, Air Force, and Army.
The co-option of the unit provided more opportunities for women to participate in military duties and also allowed women like Maj Gen Ahmed to rise through the ranks.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, during Maj Gen Ahmed’s promotion to major general in 2018, emphasized her role as a positive role model for women in the country. He encouraged her to prove that there are no limits for women in any profession.
In 2021, she was promoted to the rank of Major General further solidifying her remarkable career. which made her become the first woman to ever rise to rank in the Kenyan military.
In 2023, she was appointed as the Senior Directing Staff Air by President William Ruto.
Having broken the glass ceiling, she has become the country’s first female Airforce Commander which has been translated as a big win for Kenyan women.
Maj Gen Ahmed’s determination to succeed despite discouragement from some family members reflects her resilience and commitment to making a difference. Inspired by her uncle’s military career, she embraced the values of discipline and hard work that shaped her life from an early age.
Her rise through the ranks serves as a testament to the progress towards gender equality in the armed forces, setting an inspiring example for women across the nation.
How She Joined The Force
Further research also showed that she joined the armed forces by “accident.” One day when returning home from school after completing her secondary school education in 1983, she happened to pass by a stadium near the military offices, which at the time was conducting a recruitment exercise.
Major General Fatuma would make inquiries about joining, and as fate would have it, she joined the military the next year as an officer cadet.
