In response to the economic downturn precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown in 2020, private airlines received financial assistance to weather the crisis. The aviation industry bore the brunt of the pandemic-induced restrictions on movement, leading to a significant downturn in air travel demand.
To mitigate the adverse impacts on private airlines, the Federal Government of Nigeria disbursed a substantial sum of N4 billion during the lockdown period. This financial aid aimed to support the struggling aviation sector and ensure the survival of private airlines amidst the unprecedented challenges they faced.
However, concerns have arisen regarding the transparency and accountability of the funds disbursed to private airlines. In light of this, the House of Representatives has taken proactive measures by demanding reports from these airlines regarding the allocation and utilization of the relief funds awarded to them.
This move underscores the importance of accountability and oversight in the management of public funds, particularly during times of crisis, as the government seeks to ensure that financial assistance is effectively utilized for its intended purpose and benefits the aviation industry as a whole.
During an investigative hearing focused on the alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 relief funds by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the federal government, as well as other entities that received financial assistance, the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has taken a decisive step.
