Multichoice Nigeria, a well-known Pay-TV provider, recently announced an increment in its DStv prices, and that of its GOtv packages.

With the new development, DSTV prices, and that of GOtv saw an increase of at least 25%.

This marks the third adjustment since the previous year, succeeding the initial change made on May 1, 2023. Multichoice has announced that the most recent rise will be effective starting from Wednesday, May 1, 2024. In contrast to last year’s increase of 19% to 20% based on the package, the company is now revealing a 25% to 26% hike across all its offerings.

The new subscription fees were communicated to customers via an email titled “Price Adjustment on DStv and GOtv Packages” on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. Below is an excerpt from the email message that subscribers received.

  • On Wednesday, 1 May 2024 we will adjust our prices across all our packages on OStv and GOtv. We understand the impact this change may have on you – our valued customer, but the rise in the cost of business operations, has led us to make this difficult decision.
  • It remains our mission to provide the best entertainment and viewing experience to you and are committed to continue to deliver high-quality content and unparalleled service.
  • So, from Wednesday, 1 May 2024, the price adjustment will take effect as follows.”

DStv New Prices

As per the notification distributed to its subscribers, individuals subscribed to the DStv Premium package will experience a rise in their monthly subscription fee to N37,000 effective from May 1. This represents a 25.4% increase from the existing N29,500 fee.

Similarly, the price of the Compact+ bouquet has been raised to N25,000 from N19,800 per month, reflecting a 26.2% increment.

DStv has also announced that subscribers on its Compact bouquet will now pay N15,700, up from the current N12,500, representing a 25.6% increase. Meanwhile, those on the Confam package will face a 25.6% hike as their monthly subscription rises to N9,300 from N7,400.

Under the new pricing structure, viewers of the DStv Yanga bouquet will be charged N5,100 for their monthly subscription, marking a 21.43% increase over the current N4,200 fee.

 GOtv New Prices

Multichoice has announced price increases across its GOtv packages. Customers on the Supa Plus package will now pay N15,700, marking a 25.6% rise from the current price of N12,500. Similarly, the Supa bouquet will see its price increase to N9,600 from the current N7,600.

For the GOtv Max subscription, the new price is N7,200, up from N5,700, while the Jolli package will now cost N4,850, compared to the current price of N3,950. Multichoice has also adjusted the price of its lowest GOtv package, Jinja, which will now be N3,300 monthly instead of the current N2,700.

Although Multichoice Nigeria has yet to issue any statement regarding the factors behind the recent price review, Nigeria’s inflation increased to 33.2%.

Mixed Reaction Trails Multichoice’s Latest Price Hike

There have been varying opinions regarding the rise in prices, and below are the viewpoints expressed by certain Nigerians;

  • Reacting on X, a Netizen, @JamesAgwu_E wrote “DStv’s recent price adjustment seems unjustified. With TSTV no longer a competitive option, it’s time to explore alternatives like IPTV. The monopoly DStv holds is detrimental to consumers especially their refusal to pay per view. We need more options for fair pricing and better services.”
  • Another Netizen, @Libero_ElKeke wrote, “I have apps that give me all BeIn channels, Sky, TNT. Sports and entertainment 24/7 DStv/GOtv or whatever they call themselves won’t get a dime from someone like me”, to which @JamesAgwu_E responded, “Abeg I go like know the app, bro, I think am done with this DStv.”
  • @Titbeats1 wrote, “Ever since I started streaming games live and broadcasting it on TV + Netflix. I stopped subscribing to DStv.”
  • @NAIS_Igbo was of the opinion that the PayTv company keeps exploiting their customers because they have no competition. He wrote, “I believe the prices are high bcos of no serious competition. Take Airpeace and other foreign airlines as examples. Immediately airpeace came with a cheaper alternative, and other airlines dropped their prices.”
  • In his remarks, @_chika_oi said, “It’s disheartening to see DStv’s pricing shift without apparent justification. With limited alternatives, exploring IPTV sounds promising. Consumers deserve fair pricing and more choices for quality entertainment.”
  • @DONALDWHIT47270 blamed the incessant hike in price on the rot in the Nigerian system. “I don’t blame them I blame the rotten system of government we have”, he wrote.
  • @Debusy2024 said, “The worst of it is sometimes you hardly watch TV for a good one hour in a day due to light shortage and high cost of PMS yet they keep on increasing it.
